Elephants, Narnia and a touch of Westminster Abbey!

What is he talking about? Well today I called in at the new Butterfingers store in Harrogate. It’s cool. First I bumped into an elephant on a plinth just inside the door ( not a real one of course ). Next I discovered a live tree planted inside the shop, ok it’s not Westminster Abbey but what a great idea. On top of that they’ve got a wardrobe that is really a door just like in Narnia. I loved it.

If you are into circus skills it’s an Aladdin’s cave full of fun stuff to splash out on. Here are a few photos I took.

Ripon Festival Spring Fair 2011

Here are some photos I took at the Spring Fair in Ripon on Monday 2nd May. There was a good turn out and the sun shone all day. It would have been perfect apart from the cold wind which seemed to get stronger as the day went on. The was plenty for people to do with a fun fair, side stalls, a lovely big tea tent, ice cream, fast food, Punch and Judy for the kids and face painting too.

The Mayor of Ripon was in attendance and the Ripon band played in the afternoon. There was a picnic for the children with free food and ice cream provided by the organisers. It was a lovely event!  Hope you like the pictures.

Morley RUFC Royal Wedding Event

What a fantastic afternoon of fun and entertainment Morley RUFC put on for the local community.

When I arrived at 11am to set up my Punch and Judy Show there was hardly anyone around. The event didn’t open until 12 noon and most people were probably at home watching the Royal Wedding on television. The fairground stalls, rides, bouncy castles and food stalls were all set up and ready.

There was no need to worry. Shortly after twelve ‘o’ clock the public started to arrive in droves. Very soon the grounds of Morley RUFC were packed with families and friends all out to have a great time. There were Union Jack flags and bunting everywhere with a DJ playing music to add to the party atmosphere.

I did two shows and had a brilliant audience both times. There was also a magician, clown and face painters providing entertainment too.

Well done to Wayne Dickinson and the committee at Morley RUFC for organising such a great event.

How To Plan A Charity Or Community Event With No Funding

Vincent Pastore, Robert Iler and Jeff Marchett...

Strapped For Cash!

The funding has stopped and 2011 is going to be a bleak year for many charity and community event organisers. The cut backs are hitting hard and funding has been withdrawn on a scale never before known.

For those determined to go ahead with their events it is a time for clear thinking. Planners will need to be more resourceful and will need to rely much more on the good will of volunteers, sponsors and suppliers as budgets will be tighter than ever.

Here are my suggestions:

Know your aim

Be clear about what you want to achieve :

  • Do you want to raise money? Is so, what is your target?
  • Are you trying to help an individual or organisation? If so how? Be specific.
  • Are you trying to raise awareness? Who are you trying to influence, what do you want them to do?
  • Is your event about building community spirit or bringing people together? How are you going to achieve this?

Prioritise

  1. Make a list of everything you need for your event.
  2. Put the essential things first.
  3. Sort out your list starting with the most important at the top, least important at the bottom.
  4. Go down the list to make sure you have included everything.
  5. Decide what you can’t do without and which items are nice to have if you can get them.

Work out the cost

Make a cost sheet using your priority list.

  • What can you get FREE of charge?
  • What will you have to pay for?

Work out how much money you will need to find for the  essentials.

Make sure you know exactly what it is going to cost you to put on your event!

Be sure you can pay the bills

Get sponsors if possible, run raffles, sell tickets etc etc to get the money you need well before the event.

Before you book anything you must be certain that you have sufficient cash to pay for it.  Do not rely on gate money or public donations to bring in the money you need. Do not book suppliers in the hope that you will get a grant or that you will find the money from somewhere. If you cancel them or the event is unable to proceed you may be liable to pay a cancellation charge or even the full amount.

Remember that your suppliers will still want paying even if things go wrong.

Be optimistic

Remember the old saying,

Every cloud has a silver lining

People do still want to enjoy themselves and their is still a lot of generosity and kindness even though we are all feeling the pinch.

So don’t give up, 2011 might not be as gloomy as it seems.

Pregnant ‘Bump Painting’

Baby bump painting, easter theme

Baby bump

This ‘Bump Painting’ was produced at the annual FACE Conference which was held in Lea Valley, Herts on 11th – 13th February 2011.  It was a joint effort between myself, my daughter Natasha and fellow FACE member Juliet Eve.  Juliet Eve is an experienced ‘bump painter’ but this was a first for Natasha and myself.  An Easter theme was decided upon with Juliet roughly sketching our design ideas on a piece of paper.  We then set about painting our lovely mum-to-be, coming at her from all sides.  Juliet painted the middle section with an Easter Egg, I painted the side with the Easter Chick and Natasha painted the side with the ‘Easter Bunny’.   All in all Natasha and I were very pleased with our first attempt and are now looking forward to painting more ‘Bumps’.  A huge thank you must go to our fantastic model – Wendy Butcher.  We look forward to seeing photos of ‘Baby Butcher’ when he/she arrives.

If you are interested in having your ‘Baby Bump’ painted ring Hazel on 01748 821621.

How Long Will New Play Park Last?

A fantastic new play park was opened today in Seaham. Hundreds of school children together with crowds of local people turned out for the opening ceremony. At 2.30pm there was a ribbon cutting ceremony in which the mayor of Seaham and a couple of Sunderland footballers officially opened the amazing adventure play area. The event was a great success with music and entertainment adding to the atmosphere of excitement. Unfortunately it seems that vandals have already been targeting the brand new equipment which has been provided for the enjoyment of  children and families.  Several mums living in the neighbourhood  said that they were worried that the council would not be able to keep paying for repairs. There concern is that the trouble makers might be allowed to spoil things for all the decent people in Seaham who do care about the environment and appreciate the provision of public amenities.
