Joel’s Amazing Pirate Cakes

Every now and then I see something that really tickles my fancy. Today I went to York with my Pirate Puppet Show to perform at a little boy called Joel’s 5th birthday party. Usually there is just one birthday cake but Joel’s  mum had gone to a lot of trouble to make the party special. I couldn’t resist taking a photo of these amazing cakes which Joel’s mum had carefully and lovingly created. As you can see each one is decorated as a pirate and every child received one in his or her party box to take away  at the end. What a lovely idea. I think Joel’s mum was pleased with her pirate cakes but she did tell me that it had taken  her ages to do them. It was however a labour of love and well worth the effort.

I didn’t get a chance to sample one of the cakes but I am sure they were absolutely delicious. What do you thing of Joel’s amazing pirate cakes? Let me know what you think.

Redcar Christmas Light Switch On 2010

The Redcar Christmas Light Switch On was brilliant in spite of the horrible weather. There was a lovely atmosphere on the High Street and even though it was cold and wet there were still plenty of smiling faces. The Jolly Good Productions Christmas Characters mingled with the crowds and brought smiles to the faces of the children and juggler Tom Rolfe mesmerized everyone with his fantastic juggling, unicycling and balloon modeling. Masses of people turned out to watch the parade completely undaunted by the rain which was falling steadily by 4.30pm.The lights were turned on at five o clock by The Secret Millionaire. What a great start to the festive season for the people of Redcar.
Below is Alf The Elf ( the tallest elf you’ve ever seen ) who helped to entertain the public during the build up to the light switch on. Apparently Santa had sent Alf to Redcar to find out who had been naughty and who had been nice. Alf spoke to lots of children to see if they have been good. Fortunately he was able to report back to Santa that there are no naughty ones in Redcar.

Make A Stunning Entrance To Your Santa’s Grotto

If you are going to the trouble of creating a Santa’s Grotto for your company Xmas Party why not go the whole hog and make a stunning entrance to really wow the children and their families. Hazel and I  built this very appealing entrance entirely in balloons.

At Christmas time balloon decorating is the perfect way to enhance any venue. There is just so much scope.

We put five helium arches leading up to the grotto and positioned a toy soldier either side to guard the entrance. We used Xmas colours to compliment the existing decoration in the room.

As trained, experienced balloon decorators we can transform to bring in a festive feeling for a great party or event.

Balloon Santa Claus

It’s amazing what can be done with balloons. If you need something eye catching to grab peoples attention then a skillful use of balloons can be the perfect answer. This is a Balloon Santa Claus I made for a Children’s Christmas Party. Christmas characters always work well and because the balloons are air filled they will last a long time providing they are not tampered with.

What Makes A Good Father Christmas?

Santa Claus with a little girl
Image via Wikipedia

Father Christmas is a very important person to millions of children everywhere. Of course to adults Santa is just some guy dressed up and nobody really cares how good he is. When it comes to organising the kids Xmas party often some unfortunate is dragged in to play the part.  Usually  these press ganged Santas do a half hearted job. No attention is payed to detail, sometimes they’ve had a drink and smell of beer or perhaps they are smokers and stink of tobacco. They don’t know what to say or how to act. Actually children are very observant and soon spot an impostor. So if you are going to be Santa or you are in charge of selecting a Santa here are a few tips :

  • Find someone who is really interested in doing it. Someone who genuinely likes children
  • Try to use an older person as the real Santa is getting on a bit.
  • Remember Santa is a bit tubby so padding might be required to get the correct look.
  • Make sure Santa has a good costume.
  • Make sure the costume fits properly.
  • Santa must wear either black boots or black wellingtons. Brown shoes are a dead give away.
  • Make sure the costume is clean and fresh smelling.
  • Santa needs a white beard and a white wig. Check that no natural hair is showing when they are put on.
  • Alcohol and cigarettes are a NO near kids. Wait until afterwards.
  • Think about what Santa would say to the children. Rehearse the voice etc
  • Walk like Santa, get into the character, remember Santa is a jolly old gentleman. Play the part.

With a little bit of planning and preparation you can have a brilliant Santa who will delight the children and make your party or event even more  memorable and enjoyable. So do try and keep the tradition going and do your best for the kids.

Christmas Costume Characters In Action

A great way to add to the atmosphere of any Christmas Event is to have Christmas characters entertaining the public and guests. We have been taking our fantastic costume characters to Xmas themed events for many years and know how much they are appreciated, especially by younger children. The most important aspect of any costume character is the way it moves and interacts with people. We are very experienced and know how to really bring the characters to life.

The film clip below was taken at a shopping centre in the run up to Christmas. There are three characters, Boogaloo Bear, Monty Mouse and Rudolph The Rednose Reindeer.

We attach great importance to quality and as you can see the characters look fantastic. These are NOT costumes from a fancy dress shop!

If you require information about hiring our characters for your Xmas Party, please give either Hazel or myself a call on Tel 01748 821621.

We usually combine the characters with Christmas Face Painting, our Xmas Puppet Show or our Xmas Craft Workshop.

Traditional Amusements | Chair O Plane Ride

This Chair O Plane Ride is owned by Craske’s Traditional Amusements. I took this film clip at the 2010 Wensleydale show where I was performing my Tradtional Punch and Judy Show. It’s great to see these lovely old fashioned kiddies rides still operating and as popular as ever. This footage was taken before the public arrived. It was soon busy once the crowds turned up.

Shooting Gallery With Moving Targets!

This is the Shooting Gallery I wrote about in an earlier post. I took this film clip at the Wensleydale Show, North Yorkshire. It belongs to Craske’s Traditional Amusements who specialise in Vintage Fun Fairs. I love the moving targets.

Some might say that this type of amusement encourages an interest in guns. I think it’s harmless fun. what’s your view?
