Grand National Winner Supports Race Night Fund Raiser

Horse Racing Legend Gerry Scott attended a Charity Race Night at Fearby near Masham, North Yorkshire, to help residents raise money for the Village Hall, an important centre for the local community.

Gerry Scott is well known in horse racing circles as the only man to have ridden the winner of the Grand National and also to have started the race. He rode Merryman IInd to victory in 1960, which was the first time the race had been televised. Thirty years later, he was the official Starter at Aintree for the 1996 Grand National.

It was a great pleasure to meet Gerry and to hear about his experiences in horse racing. I was interested to learn that he started the Princess Royal at “Redcar Races” where she won her first flat race. This was of particular interest to me as I was born in Redcar. He also carried the banner for the Jockey Club round Horse Guards Parade during the cellarbrations held for the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday. The picture below shows Gerry presenting the prize for the “Best Dressed Lady” which was a bouqet of flowers and a bottle of champagne.

The Race Night was great fun and brought in much needed cash which will be used to maintain the village hall. Everyone had a great time and the organisers are confident even more folk will attend next time.

Frank Watson Kiddies Roundabouts For Hire

Kiddies Roundabouts are always a crowd pleaser at family events. It’s just not a show without them. Finding someone with good clean rides can be tricky. I met Frank Watson down at Ripon recently and was impressed with his set up. His catering and ice cream vans were both excellent ( friendly staff, immaculately clean and good food ) and the rides looked great. This is one of only two steam driven Carousel Rides in the country. Lovingly restored and maintained it is still in full working order and regularly gives rides to visiting children and adults.

Hi Ron

I would just like to thank your stilt walkers who attended our two events in July and August. They were amazing, the crowd loved them, they worked so hard and not in the nicest weather on one of the events. They were brilliant greeting people and always with the biggest smiles on their faces.

Whilst working at Ripon, North Yorkshire I had the very great pleasure of meeting The Ripon Hornblower. Although I have been to the City of Ripon many times I must admit I was completely unaware of it’s ancient traditions.

Every night the horn is blown in the city of Ripon to set the watch. There is a little ceremony followed by an explantaion of the old customs. I was also presented with a special lucky wooden penny inscribed with the Coat of Arms of the City of Ripon.

How To Build A Beach At Your Event

The Seaside is a popular theme at events and galas these days. No Seaside event would be complete without sand. This is how the organisers of a Seaside Day in Ripon, North Yorkshire tackled the problem. A large plastic sheet was laid on the grass and planks were set up on three sides to create a boundary and to contain the sand which was tipped onto the sheet. There were also small inflatable paddling pools set out round this, also containing sand. I took this photo at the end of the afternoon just as the event was closing. Earlier on it would have been impossible to take a picture as it was crowded with children digging and building sand castles etc

Shooting Gallery Is Bang On Target

There’s something special about Traditional Amusements. This is a perfect example of a good old fashioned shooting gallery. Available to hire from Craske’s it looks ever so impressive with its delightful artwork, bold colours and of course the Union Jacks flying fluttering proudly in the wind above.

Not only does the stall look fabulous, it’s great fun to have go. There are a variety of targets to choose from including moving targets in the form of ducks going from left to right and little balls floating on jets of water. It’s even interesting just standing and watching if you are not the sporting type.

In addition to the Shooting Gallery, Craske’s also have a Coconut Shie, Roll A Penny and an excellent Striker too. All of these will go well at any fete, show, gala or corporate event. They are perfect for historical events ie Dickensian, Victorian, Edwardian etc.

The organisers of the Tees Barrage Fun Day made a massive mistake when they put me in a marquee right next to Cake Designs 4 U who just happen to make the most delicious cakes in the entire world! It was too much to bear. I tried to resist but unfortunately after a very short time my will caved in and I had to indulge myself. How I survived for an entire afternoon with so much temptation within easy reach I will never know. My verdict on the cakes…..HEAVEN!

Mayor For A Minute

It was an honour to be invited by the Mayor of Richmond, Councillor Barry Heap, to visit the Town Hall and take wine with him in the Mayor’s Parlour. We had been invited as a thank you for offering to put on our Christmas Show on Xmas Eve for local children, an occasion I am really looking forward to. The entire Wood family went along ( myself, Hazel, Natasha, Katrina and Daniella ) and we took our neighbours Colin and Lorraine Vincent, Jim and Chris Phillips plus some friends, Graham and Karen Gomersall. We were treated to a tour of the Town Hall, The Mayor’s Parlour and The Council Chamber. Richmond ( North Yorkshire ) is a fascinating place with a very interesting history and Councillor Barry Heap is an expert. We all enjoyed listening to his stories of the many objects and pictures on display. We were even allowed to hold The Great Mace Of Richmond, a priceless ceremonial mace which symbolically represents the authority bestowed on the town Mayor by the Monarch.

Another very special treat was to be allowed to wear the ceremonial robes worn by the Mayor whilst on official duties. This is me when I became ” Mayor For A Minute ” Sadly my moment of fame was short lived and I had to return the chain of office and regalia before I had a chance to try and exercise my authority.

I am very proud to live in Richmond and I am glad that we are able to contribute in a small way to the affairs of the community. I hope our Xmas Show will be a huge success and that we can offer our services freely at other events from time to time work commitments permitting.
