Hawes Gala 2012 Was No wash Out!

Rain Fails To Dampen Spirits

Hawes Gala Committee

Hawes Gala Committee

Hawes Gala went ahead in spite of rain and high winds. The gala field could not be used but the organizers decided to proceed rather than let down the locals and visitors who had turned out  to enjoy the warm welcome and fun atmosphere which characterizes the show in the lovely town of  Hawes in upper Wensleydale.

At 8am the main marquee was in danger of blowing away and so it was decided to move the event indoors. Local  pubs and Hotels opened their  doors and stalls and entertainment was set up wherever space could be found. It was tight but it worked.

This years theme was Pirates and local shops and businesses had entered into the spirit of things by decorating their premises with pirate flags, parrots and other pirate paraphernalia.

The parade went ahead in the rain and many local children as well as some adults had entered the fancy dress competition.

Following the parade everyone went inside for the judging of the fancy dress, a band display and entertainment including  Punch and Judy, Balloon Modelling, Juggling and a Pirate Food Tasting Competition.

Well done the Gala Committee for being so determined to make sure everyone had a great time under such difficult conditions!

Punch And Judy Celebration Is A Huge Success

Punch and Judy

It was a perfect warm, sunny day and the crowds of people turned out to watch a truly historic event. Over one hundred Punch and Judy Professors met in Covent Garden, for Mr Punch‘s very special birthday party.

Punch and Judy men and women had travelled to London from all over the UK and indeed all over the world including puppeteers from Italy, the USA and Japan.

Slapsticks and Sausages!

Proceedings commenced at 2.30pm with a speech by organizer Glynn Edwards who stood in front of a giant Punch and Judy booth. There was a round of applause for the oldest performer, a lady in her eighties. Then Samuel Pepys came on and the spectators were asked to give a rousing shout for Mr Punch. On the second call a hundred Mr Punch’s sprang up from inside the booth and cavorted to the delight of the audience. Their Judy’s then came up and they danced together and then disappeared while the crowd sang happy birthday Mr Punch.

The birthday cake was sitting on the puppet stage and from it were pulled a string of 350 sausages. Some of the sausages had labels representing notable historic events to emphasize just how far back in time Mr Punch’s history can be traced.

Once the sausages were out up came the crocodiles and finally the Mr Punch’s with their slapsticks to chase them away and restore order.

The Grand Parade

The main celebrations ended with a grand parade round Covent Garden. A marching band lead the way, the musicians all dressed as Mr Punch. When the procession arrived back at the giant Punch and Judy booth there was a sing-song and a big cheer to end proceedings on a high note.

It was the best birthday party ever and Mr Punch can now look forward to his next big party in twenty-five years time to mark his 375th.

Wonderful Entertainment

At either side of the main stage there were Punch and Judy Shows set up and performing throughout the day. It was fascinating to see the guest performers from overseas at work. The public were treated to some wonderful entertainment by masters of the art of puppetry and Punch and Judy.

Magical Fun For Holiday Clubs

Children's Magic Show

Why Hiring A Magic Workshop Is A Great Idea!

Hire a Magic Workshop for your organization over school holidays, the kids will love it!

Keeping a group of children occupied over the holidays is quite a challenge. Anyone who runs a Holiday Club or Out Of School Club knows how difficult it can be to come up with new ideas. If your Holiday Club is boring the children won’t want to come or if they do come then they are more likely to get up to mischief if they don’t have plenty of fun stuff to do.

Setting up a workshop day, planning the activities, gathering together all the necessary resources takes time and effort which you could be putting into something else. That’s why hiring in a ready-made workshop day is such a good idea.

Although hiring outside help is expensive the cost can be well worth it. The children have a great time, they will learn some great magic and have tricks they have made to take home with them. They will remember the day for a long time, it will be a talking point and might encourage other kids to join the club. The parents will be happy and you will have further enhanced your reputation as the best kids club in town!

How To Make The Most Of The Magic Workshop

Although the Magic Workshoptakes place on one day you can easily spread the fun over an entire week. There are lots of things you can do to keep the magic working before and after the actual workshop day.  Here are a few ideas:

Banana Trouble

  • Have a dressing up day with a magic theme.
  • Read stories about wizards and magicians ie Harry Potter.
  • Build a magic den.
  • Adapt games to suit a magic theme.
  • Practice the tricks from the Magic Workshop Day
  • Put together a Magic Show
  • Rehearse the Magic Show
  • Make a stage for the Magic Show
  • Audition acts for the Magic Show.
  • Give everyone a job if they are not performing.
  • Choose music for each act.
  • Make posters to advertize the Magic Show.
  • Make tricks and props from the workshop day using the notes provided.
  • Make a Magic Video with all the children taking part. Send a copy home with each child as a keep sake.
  • Have competitions for making the best wizard’s hat or for making the best Top Hat and a white rabbit out of card.

With a little bit of imagination it’s easy to turn a one day Magic Workshop into a fantastic Magic Week.
